Kodaikanal is a city in the hills of the taluk division of the Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu India. Its name in the Tamil language means "The Gift of the Forest". Kodaikanal is referred as the "Princess of Hill stations" and has a long history as a retreat and popular tourist destination. Its a lot cooler in temperature than lower elevation cities such as Chennai. It is popular amongst the locals as well as other tourists and has earned the nickname of Princess of Hill Stations. The hilly retreat was established by American missionaries around 1845 in order to escape from the high temperatures of the plains. There are also some boarding schools of international repute here.
