Vellore lies on the banks of Palar River and is considered to be one of South Indias oldest surviving cities. The city played a pivotal role in Indias freedom struggle. The Vellore Mutiny of 1806 was one of the first upsurges against the British rule in India. The historical town is well connected by an excellent network of air road and rail transport and has benefited hugely by being ideally located between the IT capitals of Chennai and Bangalore. The name Vellore is derived from the word Velayudayaan(one who bears the spear) the main weapon of God Murugan. The word then literally means - The place of Murugan. The ancient city was ruled by successive dynasties of the Pallavas Cholas and the Rashtrakutas Vijayanagar kings the Muslim rulers of Deccan Sultans of Bijapur and the British. It is the only city other than Delhi Mumbai and Chennai to have two of the top ten premier Institutions - CMC Vellore and VIT University.
