Valparai is a hill station in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu India. It is located 3500 feet above sea level on the Anaimalai Hills range of the Western Ghats at a distance of 100 km from Coimbatore and 65 km from Pollachi. There are 40 hairpin bends on the way to Valparai from Azhiyar. While major portions of the land is owned by private tea companies large forest areas continue to be out of bounds. The Government of Tamilnadu in collaboration with ITDC initiated Tourism promotion through infrastructure development including Resort hotels and Amusement parks to attract tourists. The history of Valparai dates back to the year 1846 when Mr. Ramasamy Mudaliyar started cultivating coffee in his private estate. Afterwards in 1864 the Karnatic Coffee Company started a coffee plantation in the region. However the effort did not prove beneficial therefore it was aborted and some part of the land was sold. Tamil and Malayalam are the two languages which are largely spoken in these areas owing to its location in Tamil Nadu as well as its proximity to the state of Kerala. Valparai is very well connected through flights and trains as well as buses. The nearest airport to this hill station is the Coimbatore Airport which is located at a distance of 113 km away. Valparai can also be reached via buses most of which are available from Pollachi.
