Patiala is a city in the Punjab state of India. Patiala district is one of the erstwhile princely cities of Punjab. Located in the south-eastern part of the state, 65 km from the state capital of Chandigarh. Patiala means Pati (land) of Baba Ala Singh, who founded the State of Patiala. The cultural history of the district goes back to long before the Mughal dynasty established its hold in India. However, the city of Patiala developed around the Qila Mubarak, the main fort, which was built in 1763 by Baba Ala Singh. Under the rule of the Maharaja Narender Sing during 1845, 1862, the city was fortified and 10 gates around the city were built as safety measures. Patiala is known for the "Phulkari" crafted textiles, Cuisine, architecturally rich monuments and where you can get a glimpse of authentic Punjab history and heritage.
