Jalandhar is a city in Jalandhar District in the state of Punjab, India. It is located 134 km northwest of the state capital, Chandigarh. In Hindu mythology, Jalandhara was the eponymous kingdom of a devil in Satyuga. It was also known as Prasthala at the time of the Mahabharta and as Jullundur in British times. It is perhaps one of the oldest cities of Punjab and owes its name to several legends in the past. Folklore traces the name to a demon king, Jalandhar from the times of the Puranas and Mahabharata; while some credit it to the vernacular term Jalandhar or area inside water, meaning the tract between two rivers flowing in the state of Punjab. The capital of Punjab till 1953, Jalandhar was the home of several patriotic leaders of the Indian independence movement.
