Karaikal is a very old temple town in Pondicherry. It is on the east coast about 135 km. from Pondicherry and 300 km. from Chennai towards south. The town is small with a total of 161 sq Km. with marine time climate. Karaikal has a rich architectural and religious heritage with special mention of Sri Dharbarenyeswaraswamy Temple the famous 7th century temple which is one of the most well known of all Lord Shivas temples in India. It was built to mark Lord Shivas attainment of Abhayahastham.The temple compex includes the Sapthavidanga Shrine which enshrines an emerald lingam known as Nagavidnaga and is a naturally formed lingam. The Nalatheertham includes three holy tanks Bharma theertham Saraswathy theertham and Nala theertham are present where one can take a dip and rejuvenate body and spirit.
