Located on the banks of River Krishna with the sea coast on the west and the hills and forts of Sahyadri surrounding it. Sangli is known as the Turmeric city and Sugar Belt of India. Sangli is situated on the banks of river Krishna and is the largest market place for Turmeric in Asia and houses over 30 sugar factories. The Ganesh Temple of Sangli is a historical landmark of the city and is visited by thousands of pilgrims across the world. Sangli is also noted for its cusine; namely Bhelpuri and Bhadang. Sangli city is also known as Natyapandhari the birthplace of Marathi drama and is famous for different cultural activities educational facilities and its very own tradition of Co-operatives. Some of the other places are the Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary and Dandoba Hills Forest Preserve. It is known as the home of several species of deer as well as wild boar and peacocks. There are also some small carnivores like hyenas and foxes to be found here.
