Jabalpur is a city in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. Jabalpur is the administrative headquarters of Jabalpur district and Jabalpur division. Jabalpur is located in the Mahakaushal region in the geographic center of India, 308 kilometers (191 mi) east of Bhopal, the state capital. Jabalpur is often addressed as Sanskaardhaani or the Cultural Capital of Madhya Pradesh. Historically, a center of Kalchuri and Gond dynasties, Jabalpur has a syncretic culture influenced by several neighboring states. It was gradually annexed in British India as a major cantonment town during early nineteenth century. During the Indian independence movement, Jabalpur became the site of the historical Indian National Congress session which elected Subhash Chandra Bose as Congress President for the first time. The name of the city Jabalpur is basically derived from Arabic word Jabal which means mountain linking it to the ancient trade connection with Arab countries.
