Located in the Prabhas Kshetra near veraval in Saurashtra of Gujrat. It is the most sacred of the twelve Jyotirlings of the God Shiva. Somnath means "The Protector of Moon God". It has had a long and eventful history and been built and destroyed a number of times down the centuries. The ancient inscriptions and carvings found here reveal that the place was initially inhabited by the Aryans. Somnath is also known by several other names including Deo Pattan Prabhas Pattan or Pattan Somnath.
