Nellore City is situated on the north bank of Pennar River and lies in the southern part of the State. It is at a distance of 173-km from Chennai and is the headquarters of the district. It gets its name from the word Nellu meaning paddy and Ur meaning town. Nellore was also known as Vikramasimhapuri. It is also an important commercial centre and has places of historical importance like temples harbours and forts; as well as enjoys the scenic beauty of hills lakes and beaches.
