Kurnool is situated on the southern banks of the Tungabhadra and Handri rivers in the west-central part of the state. It is the main town in the district of the same name. According to legends the Odderas in the 11th century carted stones for construction of the temple at Alampur and made a stop at the present town ofKurnool before crossing River Tungabhadra. As the locals here supplied oil for greasing the carts they called the place Kandenavolu or Town of Grease which over time became Kurnool.
