Gwalior is a city in Madhya Pradesh India lying 122 kilometers (76 mi) south of Agra and 423 kilometers (263 mi) north of Bhopal the state capital. Gwalior occupies a strategic location in the Gird region of India and the city and its fortress have served as the center of several of historic northern Indian kingdoms. Gwalior is the administrative headquarters of Gwalior district and Gwalior division. Gwaliors tradition as a royal capital continued until the formation of present day India with the Scindias having their dynastic seat here. The bustling city atop a hill is dominated by the Gwalior fort which has been the battleground for many struggles for power. Today Gwalior is an important tourist destination due to its historical and architectural significance as well as for being a pre-medieval centre of Jainism. Gwalior according to ancient history was Gopalkash said to be the same place where Bhima from the epic Mahabharata attained victory.
