Tabo is known for the Tabo monastery and is the base point to visit Dhanker Monastery. Tabo lies on the Nako - Kaza route and guests coming from Sangla and not choosing to stay at Nako often stay over at Tabo before moving ahead to Kaza. Tabo village is located in Lahaul and Spiti District and is around 46 km south of Kaza. It lies on the left bank of the Spiti River at an altitude of 3280 m. At a height of 10500 ft this high altitude desert is home to the second most important Buddhist monastery in the entire Himalayan region - the Tabo Gompa. It is now more than 1000 years old.
